If the other party produced a weapon and I used mine to defend my life, technically I would be the aggressor and at fault. If they come upon a situation where a man is mercilessly beating a woman on the ground to death, they will first separate the two vs. shooting the man committing the battery. The woman might have started the altercation and therefore be the aggressor. Once separated however, if the man again attacks, the situation has been reset and they may act with deadly force to prevent great bodily harm. Don’t think of it as much as like an action-adventure story or an apocalypse movie as for just an unexpected, very long walk home.
They are better prepared than we are when it comes to such attacks. It took months for any Federal entity to even begin to try and adminOster aid and try and restore order. So it will be much longer for them to mobilize in a National crisis such as an EMP. With that said, for an EMP I recommend storing enough food and water to feed your family for a year.
You won't be able to get these critical items post-collapse.
Unless you truly live in a mono climate area, be sure that you pack your GHB intelligently to account for these curve balls. This will affect the paths you take, how fast you can move and what items and Equipment you will need in order to protect yourself from inclement conditions. In a grave extreme, it is not out of the question, and it is not impossible that you might have to travel a very long way on foot in order to get home.
Fire is one of the most basic survival needs, so it’s good to have a back-up. It’s possible that you’ll get wet for whatever reason, so changing your socks could spare you a lot of discomfort. Keep a pair in your bag because it won’t take much space, and it is super light.
What to Pack?
A get home bag is lightweight, so it won’t slow you down, yet packed with enough essentials to help you reach home alive. There are many reasons why you might need a get home bag. Natural disasters, accidents on the road, or even just a vehicle break down could leave you stranded for a short to a moderate period of time. No matter how close you are to your home on a daily basis, there is a minimum of food, water, and supplies you will have in your get home bag. These contents will form the basis of your get home bag and you will add onto that if you have a greater distance to travel. In 2005 hurricane Wilma knocked down so many trees in our neighborhood, it took 12 hours to clear enough road to leave out little area.
Get a bird’s eye view of all the possible scenarios. The first level should be the most accessible of the three. This level will ensure that you get home safely within a 3-hour period. The items here will prove to be very useful but aren’t helpful when it comes to overnight stays. The bottom items are more of the long-term variety while the ones on top are the ones that you’ll be sure to need right away.
Level 2 Items
An additional kit, GHB 2 is added to whichever vehicle we take. It augments GHB 1, without duplicating the duplicates. The last GHB is #3, for the once or twice a year, that we’re about 120 miles from home. Again, it augments #1, duplicates #2 as well as the additional supplies for an extended walk. Being able to create a fire will be essential if you have to stop for a night.
A get home bag is designed to get you from home in an SHTF disaster. It’s typically designed to serve you for a few hours, a few days tops. Also consider that speed might be of the essence in some situations. How far and more importantly how fast can you travel with your get home bag packed the way it is? As mentioned above keeping it light and lean is paramount. Below is a list of additional items you might consider storing in your vehicle alongside your GHB.
So getting in touch with loved ones after such a disaster becomes impossible. If you try to set a large log on fire with your lighter, you’re going to be disappointed. If you’re not experienced at starting fires, it can be surprisingly difficult.
Water always tops the list when it comes to survival. For your get home bag, you’ll need something that can carry water, but it has to be made of the right material. You’re supposed to keep at least one bug out bag in a safe yet easily accessible location at home and another inside your bug out vehicle. That way, you can just grab it and go when you need to set out for your bug out location.
Pack the clothes relative to the location and season. A wide brim sun hat matters if you are walking in the sun long distance. If you can, go to an outdoor store, try a few before you select one. You can load up your car with supplies and then if needed load those items into the backpack. Note – we focus a lot on a car kit, but think of the car kit as a kit you will pick through to create your Get Home Bag. Your car conserves heat, provides some safety, and protects you from bad weather.
Your job, office location and career may change how you prepare your get home bag. Plus, you’ll need to think about possible emergencies and the geographical location to see if there’s anything else you’ll need. The second level should have items that will tide you over after a length of time has passed, i.e., 8 hours or more. Consider putting items that you’ll need for a 12-hour journey here. Your get home bag will consist of roughly 3 levels. Every level will have items you’ll need to survive for a specific time period.
Walking Stick – There’s a very good chance that you’ll be walking most of the time. Collapsible walking sticks are convenient and provide support for your knees while on extended travel. This item can also double as an emergency shelter when coupled with a poncho.
In most cases you’ll be on the road for several hours at the most. The basic recommendation for a get home bag goes as far as food is 3 days’ worth. That means you will be able to keep it with you more often without raising suspicion. Transportation services will most likely be down, and people will be stranded in subways.
Up to you which items you need most, of course. Walkie talkies, handheld CB radios, NOAA emergency radios – ideally, your family members should each have one of these. You just never know when an -ahem – emergency could hit. Remember, your get home bag isn’t just for SHTF, it’s for everyday emergencies as well.
The Bug Out Bag is intended to get you to your destination safely. It might be from school to home, or from home to your camp, or from home to a relative's house.
